Undergraduates enrolling in SRP-99 must be on an approved Research Operational Plan (ROP) if the course proposal describes any on-campus work. Undergraduates do not need to be on an approved ROP if the SRP-99 course is for 100% remote work.

Effective Fall 2020: During the process of creating a contract, MyUCLA will electronically verify the student’s Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) training status. Students who have satisfied the training requirement will be allowed to create their contracts normally and their safety training status will be displayed on the contract. Students who have not satisfied the training requirement will be given a link to safety training website and will not be allowed create a contract until their safety training requirement has been verified. In most cases, verification can be done in real-time, but students will be warned that it may take up to 24 hours to verify their status after they have completed the safety training class.

On a case-by-case basis, undergraduates are allowed to participate in campus research activities, provided they are part of an approved Research Operational Plan, adhere to the lab safety guidelines in Interim Policy 906, and take the daily symptom monitoring survey. UCLA’s Student Research Program assists undergraduates in formalizing their research and becoming part of the larger university research community. The SRP-99 course allows undergraduates to receive course credit for engaging in entry-level research experiences under the supervision of a UCLA faculty. This course is particularly suited for lower-division and first-quarter transfer students.
Enrolling in SRP-99 does not place students into open research projects. Students must have a current research project with a UCLA Faculty before initiating the enrollment process. Visit our Getting Started page to learn more about how to find a research project and mentor.
SRP-99
Students can enroll in SRP-99 to receive 1 unit of lower division credit for 3-5 hours of research work per week or 2 units for 6-10 hours of research work per week during the academic year. For Summer 6-week sessions, students receive 1 unit for 5-8 hours of work per week and 2 units for 10-16 hours of work per week.
Students in the College of Letters and Science may enroll in up to a total of 10 units of SRP-99 credit throughout their undergraduate career. However, only 6 units will count towards the graduation unit requirement. Students who have completed 6 units of SRP-99 may enroll in an additional 4 units without credit applied toward their degree. Students may only enroll in one SRP-99 course per quarter.
Eligibility
- Must have a current research project with a UCLA faculty
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must have full time status prior to enrollment (not applicable during the Summer)
- Students working with a UCLA Health Sciences faculty: students enrolling in SRP-99 with a UCLA Health Sciences faculty must receive clearance before beginning their research activities. Clearance is obtained by registering through the UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Program.
Enrollment
Students are enrolled in SRP-99 only after submitting their signed contracts to the Undergraduate Research Center – Sciences by the quarterly deadline. Visit the Enrolling in SRP-99 page for complete enrollment information.
Grading
SRP-99 is a Pass/No Pass course. At the end of the quarter, the sponsoring faculty certifies that the contract has been completed and submits a grade. Grades must be submitted no later than 1 week after final exams. Students are not required to complete an evaluation or assignment at the end of the quarter. Completing an evaluation for the course is optional.
