SCIENCE SKILLS GRADUATE RESEARCH MENTOR (TUTOR)

We are searching for qualified applicants to serve as a part-time Science Skills Graduate Research Mentor (job title: Tutor) for the Undergraduate Research Center-Sciences. The Undergraduate Research Center supports and funds undergraduate research on the UCLA campus. The Graduate Research Mentor will lead workshops on science writing and presentation skills as well as lead workshops on how to get into research at a variety of outreach opportunities. Workshops led by Graduate Research Mentors include: Introduction to Research at UCLA (given at Orientation), How to Get into Research/SRP (Student Research Programs) workshops, Poster Assembly workshops, Abstract workshops, Research Careers workshops, Writing a Personal Statement, Giving an Oral Presentation, Applying to Graduate School. Graduate Research Mentors also lead science laboratory tours and serve on graduate student panels. For these efforts, the Graduate Research Mentor will be paid as a tutor (individual rate: $21.70/hour and group rate $26.70/hour). This is a part-time position for 1-8 hours per week.

The candidate should be an advanced graduate student in a STEM field and be willing to make at least a one-year commitment to the position. We are looking for a graduate student with excellent interpersonal and communication skills that has a sincere interest in working with and assisting undergraduates. While employed by the URC, Graduate Research Mentors are required to make normal progress towards their Ph.D. as outlined by their departmental guidelines.

SCIENCE WRITING SKILLS INSTRUCTOR

We are searching for qualified applicants to serve as a part-time Science Writing Skills Instructors for the Amgen Scholars Program or for the CARE Science, Engineering & Math (SEM) Summer Program (Job title: Tutor). Both the Amgen and CARE SEM Programs are 10-week summer research programs for undergraduate students. Students work at least 40 hours per week in a UCLA laboratory. As part of the program, students are required to submit an abstract and a proposal summarizing their project. They are also required to write a 10-20 page paper in the format of a bona fide science paper summarizing their research project, results and conclusions. The Science Writing Skills Instructor will work one-on-one with the Scholars to evaluate their writing and provide feedback so that they produce a high quality and professional product. For these efforts, the Science Writing Skills Instructor will be paid as a one-on-one tutor (rate $21.70/hour).
The position is expected to run from approximately June 15 until August 30 with an estimated work schedule of 8 hours per week.

The candidate should be an advanced graduate student in the biomedical sciences (including bioengineering). This is a great opportunity for a Ph.D. to learn teaching skills. While this opportunity is for one summer, it may be extended to future summers.
