Luke is a Biomedical Science major at La Sierra University. He conducted research in Dr. Nathaniel Sutter’s Worm Pyramid Lab exploring the mechanism of anhydrobiosis found in novel Panagrolaimus nematode species by creating and managing dry down assays. As an Amgen scholar at UCLA, Luke is working in a computational biology lab under Dr. Matteo Pellegrini. Luke’s project involves testing whether specific protein domains that cluster together on a UMAP of roughly 20,000 Protein Domains across ~10,000 genomes physically interact. His experiment involves developing and testing pipelines to identify domain pairs based on co-occurrence patterns, then utilizing ColabFold to predict the 3D structures and interface confidence(ipTM) of the paired domains. Luke is particularly interested in the potential of this project since it could help uncover more information regarding Domains of Unknown Function(DUFs) leading to the possibility of untouched therapeutic targets.
