OVERVIEW
The Student Research Program (SRP) assists undergraduates in formalizing their research experience and joining the university research community. Enrolling in an SRP-99 course allows undergraduates to receive university credit for engaging in research experiences under the supervision of a UCLA faculty. SRP-99 courses are particularly suited for entry-level research experiences for lower-division and first-quarter transfer students.
After securing a research project with a UCLA faculty, students initiate the SRP-99 enrollment process on MyUCLA. Students create a course contract which outlines the work they will be doing with their faculty mentor. These details should be arranged prior to creating the contract. After creating the contract, students must procure their faculty mentor’s signature and submit their signed contract to the Undergraduate Research Center for approval and enrollment.
Creating a course contract alone does not enroll a student into the course, nor does it automatically place a student into a research project. Students are responsible for finding a faculty member to work with before initiating the enrollment process.
SRP-99 credit is formally awarded through the faculty mentor’s department. For example, if a faculty mentor is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, students will enroll in CHEM-99. Students cannot receive SRP-99 credit in a department that their faculty mentor does not belong to.
SRP-99 POLICIES
During the academic year, students who are working 3-5 hours per week can enroll in one unit and students working 6-10 hours per week can enroll in two units. During Summer Sessions, students working 5-8 hours of work per week can enroll in one unit, and students working 10-16 hours per week can enroll in two units.
Undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science may enroll in a cumulative total of ten SRP-99 units. A maximum of six SRP-99 units may be applied towards the graduation unit requirement. Students who have completed six units of SRP-99 may enroll in an additional four units without credit applied toward their degree. Students may enroll in one SRP-99 course per quarter.
Eligibility
- Must have a research project arranged with a UCLA faculty
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must have full time status prior to enrollment (not applicable during the Summer)
- *Students working with a UCLA Health Sciences faculty must receive clearance before beginning their research activities. Clearance is obtained by registering with the UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Program.
Enrollment
The deadline to submit signed SRP-99 contracts is 5:00 PM on Friday of Week 2 each quarter. Enrollment is processed after contracts have been approved. All contracts must be submitted electronically through MyUCLA Message Center. Hard copy contracts are not accepted. Students must create and submit new contracts for each quarter they enroll in the course. Visit the Enrolling in SRP-99 page for complete enrollment information.
Grading
SRP-99 is graded as Pass/No Pass. Faculty mentors submit grades at the end of the quarter through the Gradebook feature on MyUCLA.

UCLA POLICY 906: UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHER LABORATORY SAFETY
UCLA Policy 906 : Undergraduate Researcher Laboratory Safety (Interim Policy) applies to all UCLA undergraduate researchers.
UCLA recognizes that undergraduate students participating in research projects may not have the scientific background, technical knowledge, or practical experience to engage safely in all research activities. As a result, some research activities require additional safety requirements. Some activities that involve highly hazardous materials are prohibited.
We recommend that all students review UCLA Policy 906 prior to beginning research activities and that they consult with their PI/Faculty about what safety training(s) are required.
OVERVIEW
The University has designated that undergraduates who are working with certain UCLA faculty as part of SRP-99 must complete Lab Safety Fundamentals (LSF) training prior to enrollment. LSF is a free, online course administered by the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) office and can be completed on WorkSafe.
Description: This module will provide an overview of laboratory safety requirements, and is required by all laboratory personnel. Topics of discussion include: the recognition and mitigation of laboratory hazards; the use of engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment; working safety with chemicals, the use of SDSs, procedures for disposing of hazardous chemical waste, and fire safety precautions for the laboratory. This course is the initial training offered for Lab Safety and only taken once.
Effective Fall 2020: During the process of creating a contract, MyUCLA will electronically verify the student’s Lab Safety Fundamentals (LSF) training status. Students who have satisfied the training requirement will be allowed to create their contracts normally and their safety training status will be displayed on the contract. Students who have not satisfied the training requirement will be given a link to safety training website and will not be allowed create a contract until their safety training requirement has been verified. In most cases, verification can be done in real-time, but students will be warned that it may take up to 24 hours to verify their status after they have completed the safety training class.
Students will receive a notification prior to their certification expiring and will be required to complete a refresher course to maintain their certification.

When are SRP-99 contracts due?
Signed contracts are due by 5:00 PM on Friday of Week 2 each quarter. For summer, contracts are due at 5:00 PM on Friday of Week 2 of the session you are enrolling in (A or C).
Can I enroll in more than one SRP-99 course?
No, students may enroll in only one SRP-99 course each quarter.
If you are working with two different faculty on different projects and want to receive course credit for both, consider enrolling in an SRP-99 course with one faculty and in an upper division tutorial course (196, 198, or 199) with the other.
During summer, students may only enroll in one session (Session A or C).
When can I create an SRP-99 contract?
Contracts can be created as soon as enrollment opens. If you are creating a contract for a future quarter, make sure you select the correct quarter you want to enroll in SRP-99. We recommend creating SRP-99 contracts early to ensure you have adequate time to receive your Faculty Research Mentor’s signature before the enrollment deadline.
Students will need a full-time status (12 credits) during time of enrollment into an SRP-99 course. Because of this, we will not be able to process enrollments until your second pass for the quarter has begun (unless your priority group has been approved for more units). You can find when your enrollment appointments begin here: UCLA Registrar’s Office Enrollment Appointments.
I cannot find my Faculty Research Mentor on the list of available SRP mentors on MyUCLA. What can I do?
If you cannot find your Faculty Research Mentor on the list when creating your SRP-99 contract, follow these steps:
- Ensure you are searching for your mentor under the correct department. You should select the department that your Faculty Mentor has an appointment in, not your major’s home department (if they are different).
- Ensure you are spelling your Mentor’s name correctly.
- Contact the URC-Sciences’ Office (by email or phone) for further assistance. Your Faculty may not have sponsored an SRP-99 course before and they may not be in the SRP Faculty Mentor Database. If you know your Faculty has not participated in SRP-99 before, refer them to this resources page.
My Faculty Research Mentor cannot sign my SRP-99 contract before the enrollment deadline. What can I do?
We strongly encourage students to create their SRP-99 contracts as early as possible so Faculty have enough time to sign it before the enrollment deadline.
If you Faculty cannot sign the contract in time, contact the URC-Sciences’ Office for further assistance.
Can I change my units after the quarter has started?
Undergraduate students can change units on variable-unit classes using MyUCLA with no fee during the first two weeks of the term. In weeks three and four, a per-class change fee is assessed. After week four, students are charged a per-class change fee plus a per-class penalty fee. After week four, College or school approval is required to make changes.
How many SRP-99 units can I enroll in as an undergraduate?
Undergraduates can enroll in a cumulative total of 10 SRP-99 units but a maximum of 6 units will apply to the graduation unit requirement. Units 7-10 will still appear on your transcript but the units will not apply to your total unit count.
Where can I learn more about upper division research courses?
Upper division tutorial courses (numbered 196-199) are administered by each academic department separately. While the courses may be structured similarly across campus, specific policies (e.g. prerequisites) may vary by department. Students should contact a department counselor or student affairs officer in their faculty research mentor’s department to learn more.
Do I have to pay to take SRP-99 during the summer?
You will not be assessed the summer session unit fees but will be assessed all other regular term fees. You can use this calculator to estimate how much you’ll pay for Summer Sessions: https://summer.ucla.edu/fees-payment-and-financial-aid/
What are the requirements for SRP-99?
Students must have a research project with a UCLA Faculty, must be in good academic standing with the University (no Holds on your account or record), and must have full-time status before enrolling. During summer sessions, students do not need to be enrolled in any courses prior to enrolling in an SRP-99 course.
Can part-time students do SRP-99?
Students can only enroll in an SRP-99 course as a part time student if they have Reduced Fee Enrollment for 3 consecutive quarters. Please see a College counselor for more information on these special petitions.
I currently have hold on my academic record. Can I still enroll in an SRP-99 course this quarter?
No, students who have a hold on their account cannot enroll in SRP-99. For questions about your hold, please contact an academic counselor in your counseling unit (AAP, CAC, Honors, or Athletics).
I am enrolled in over 18 units and would like to enroll in an SRP-99 course. Is that possible?
The College and schools set a maximum number of units in which a student may enroll. Students must petition to enroll in excess units. Click here to learn more about study list limits.
Can I enroll in SRP-99 and receive work-study in the same lab?
Yes, as long as your SRP-99 hours are different than your work-study hours. Ask your faculty mentor if they have any objections.
Can I only do research in my major?
Students may do research with any faculty member at UCLA. However, if enrolling in SRP-99 satisfies a degree or elective requirement for your major, you may be required to work with faculty in your home department. Students should meet with a department counselor to learn more.
Can I enroll in SRP-99 with a non-UCLA faculty?
Students conducting research outside of UCLA may enroll in RESEARCH PRACTICE 99 to receive credit for their work. Click here to learn more about RES PRC 99.
I am a student in the Samueli School of Engineering. Can I enroll in an SRP-99 course?
Yes, students in the Samueli School of Engineering may enroll in SRP-99 courses.

How do I enroll in the Laboratory Safety Fundamentals course?
You will need to visit UCLA’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) website to enroll in the Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Concepts course. Please visit the following site to enroll: UCLA Worksafe .
What trainings do I have to take? Which are required?
For the purposes of SRP-99, only the Lab Safety Fundamentals course may be required.
In addition to the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) course, more lab safety training may be required depending on the safety requirements of your lab. Consult with your Faculty Research Mentor regarding additional required training. Visit UCLA Worksafe for more information on lab safety.
I have taken the Laboratory Safety Fundamentals course already and now plan to enroll in a contract course. Do I need to take it again?
No, unless your training has expired. An online refresher course is required upon the expiration date and every year after. Please visit Laboratory Safety Online Refresher Training .
Can I enroll in the Laboratory Safety Fundamentals course if I do not have a SRP faculty mentor?
Yes. Even if you have not yet found a faculty mentor, you will still be able to enroll in Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Concepts course.
Do I have to have verification of safety training documents available at the time of enrolling my SRP 99 contract?
Effective Fall 2020: During the process of creating a contract, MyUCLA will electronically verify the student’s Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) training status.
When can I expect to receive my grade for SRP-99?
All grades must be submitted by your Faculty Research Mentor within one week after Finals Week.
Does the ‘NR’ affect me negatively?
When graduate schools see the ‘NR’ they might take a point off of your admission application but sometimes they don’t. To be on the safe side make it your responsibility to remind your faculty mentor to turn in the grade (P or NP) on time.
If you notice you have an NR, please notify our office during the next academic quarter so we can make sure it is corrected. Do not wait until years later when you are graduating; it will be too late!
What does ‘NR’ stand for?
“NR” stands for “Not Reported.” When you see this on your DPR, it means your Faculty Research Mentor did not submit your grade. In order for you to receive credit, your mentor must submit your grade through MyUCLA’s Gradebook.
If my evaluation and/or grade was submitted late, when will my DPR/transcript reflect this correction?
It will take approximately 1 week for you to see the NR replaced with a P or NP on your DPR/transcripts.
Do grades for SRP-99 affect my GPA?
No, because SRP-99 courses are graded as Pass/No Pass only, they do not impact your GPA.

WHAT IS SRP-99?
The Student Research Program (SRP) assists undergraduates in formalizing their research experience and joining the university research community through SRP-99 courses. Enrolling in an SRP-99 course allows students to receive credit for engaging in faculty-supervised research experiences. SRP-99 courses are particularly suited for lower-division and first-quarter transfer students. Students do not need to be participating in projects that are 100% independent or self-initiated. It is very common for undergraduates to contribute to an ongoing project led by a graduate student or postdoctoral scholar.
COURSE STRUCTURE
- SRP-99 encompasses all courses numbered “99” (e.g. CHEM 99, PHYSICS 99, MCDB 99, etc.).
- Grading is Pass/No Pass.
- Students can receive 1 unit of credit for working 3-5 hours per week or 2 units of credit for working 6-10 hours per week throughout the quarter.
- Students may enroll in a cumulative total of 10 units of SRP-99 throughout their undergraduate career, but only a maximum of 6 units will apply to the graduation unit requirement. Units 7-10 will still appear on students’ transcripts but these units will not apply to their total unit count.
- Students may enroll in one SRP-99 course each quarter.
- Students cannot enroll in an SRP-99 course and an upper division tutorial course (numbered 196-199) with the same faculty in the same quarter.
- Students formally enroll receive SRP-99 course credit through the faculty’s department. For example, students will enroll in CHEM 99 if they are working with a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
- Must have full time status (enrolled in a minimum of 12 units) prior to enrolling in SRP-99. This eligibility requirement is waived during Summer Sessions.
- Must have a research project arranged with a UCLA faculty.
- **Students working with a UCLA Health Sciences faculty (David Geffen School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Nursing) must receive clearance from the UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Office prior to beginning their research activities.
ENROLLMENT PROCESS
Students enroll in SRP-99 courses using course contracts, which are created on MyUCLA. Students will select the term (e.g. Fall 2023), the faculty mentor/instructor of record, and the number of units. They will submit a short course proposal outlining their project and responsibilities for the quarter. These details should be discussed between the faculty mentor and student prior to the contract being created. After the contract is generated, the student must procure their faculty mentor’s signature and submit the signed contract to the Undergraduate Research Centers for approval and enrollment. Electronic signatures are acceptable. The quarterly enrollment deadline is 5 PM on Friday of Week 2. Enrollment is quarterly; students must submit a new SRP-99 contract each quarter.
EXPECTATIONS & GRADING
SRP-99 students must be active participants in the research process. It is discouraged from assigning exclusively clerical work, custodial work, or work that does not contribute to the project described in the SRP-99 course proposal. Students should have an intellectual stake in the work being conducted. Faculty mentors and their students should also mutually agree on a work schedule. While students may be directly supervised by another lab member, faculty mentors should meet with them periodically to track their progress.
It is the faculty mentor’s responsibility to communicate the terms of what constitutes a PASS grade for the course (completion of a specific component of the research, completion of scheduled hours, etc.). For SRP-99, no written assignments are due to the department for a grade to be issued.
Grades must be submitted by the regular quarterly deadline using MyUCLA Gradebook. For assistance, faculty mentors should refer to the Registrar’s Office Guidebook for using Gradebook Express. If no grade is submitted prior to the end of the grading period, the student will receive a grade of “NR”, or Not Reported.
BECOME AN SRP-99 FACULTY MENTOR
UCLA faculty must register to be an SRP-99 Faculty Mentor before undergraduates can enroll in an SRP-99 course with them. The registration form is available below. Faculty will receive a confirmation email from urcsciences@college.ucla.edu after their registration has been successfully processed.
SRP-99 Faculty Mentor registration is valid for the duration of a faculty’s employment at UCLA and does not need to be renewed each quarter. If a faculty’s appointment information (an addition/change of departments) or work information (office location, phone number, etc.) changes, they should email us at urcsciences@college.ucla.edu so we can update their information in the enrollment system.
Faculty must hold a tenure track (or similar) appointment in order to serve as an SRP-99 Faculty Mentor. Postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and other professional research staff can supervise & work with undergraduate students but only UCLA faculty can serve as the official instructor of record for an SRP-99 course.
NOTE: This link is only for faculty in the Division of Life Sciences, Division of Physical Sciences, Samueli School of Engineering, or Fielding School of Public Health and UCLA Health. Faculty in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences must register as an SRP-99 Faculty Mentor using instructions detailed on the URC-HASS website.
MENTORSHIP TRAINING
Effective mentoring is critical to the retention of students in STEM fields and is linked to greater productivity, research independence, and career satisfaction. UCLA Graduate Programs in Bioscience (GPB) offers a variety of Mentorship Training Programs. They follow curricula developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) and National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN), an evidence-based, interactive approach that engages mentors in collective problem solving and connects them with resources to optimize their mentoring practices.
SAFETY TRAINING — UCLA POLICY 906
UCLA Policy 906: Undergraduate Researcher Laboratory Safety applies to all UCLA undergraduate researchers.
UCLA recognizes that undergraduate students participating in research projects may not have the scientific background, technical knowledge, or practical experience to engage safely in all research activities. As a result, some research activities require additional safety requirements. Some activities that involve highly hazardous materials are prohibited.
The University has designated that undergraduates who are working with certain faculty as part of SRP-99 must complete Lab Safety Fundamentals (LSF) training prior to enrollment. LSF is a free, online course administered by the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) office and can be completed on WorkSafe.
This Policy applies to all Principal Investigators and lab staff working with Undergraduate Researchers in UCLA research laboratories. The safety requirements outlined in this Policy pertain to all research and teaching laboratories. This policy does not apply to students enrolled in regular laboratory courses for credit (e.g., Life Sciences 23L). We recommend that faculty review UCLA Policy 906 with all new undergraduate researchers to their labs/research projects.
CLEARANCE FOR HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENT RESEARCHERS
