Meet the Director

Dr. Jorge Avila is an Assistant Director of the Undergraduate Research Center- Sciences, where he leads programs including URSP, URFP, CAMP, and the URC Sciences Summer Program, and advises the Undergraduate Science Journal (USJ) and the Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Association (UIRA). A first-generation Latino neuroscientist, he earned his Ph.D. from Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center, studying the neural mechanisms underlying substance addiction. At UCLA, Dr. Avila is dedicated to supporting and guiding undergraduate students from all backgrounds, helping them explore research opportunities, present their work, publish their findings, and prepare for careers in STEM. He is known for his approachable mentorship style and passion for helping students succeed.
