OVERVIEW
UCLA undergraduates who are conducting supervised research outside of UCLA may enroll in RES PRC 99 to receive course credit for their research experience. To enroll in RES PRC 99 during the academic year (fall, winter, or spring quarters), students must be in good standing (no holds on their student account and not on academic probation) and have full time status prior to enrollment (enrolled in 12 units minimum not including RES PRC 99 units). Students working 3-5 hours per week will enroll for 1 unit and students working 6-10 hours (or more) will enroll for 2 units. Grades for RES PRC 99 will be submitted after submission of a culminating assignment by Friday of Finals Week.
Eligibility

- Must be in good academic standing
- Must have full time status prior to enrollment (not applicable during the Summer)
CREATE YOUR RES PRC 99 COURSE PROPOSAL
Your research will be supervised by your Faculty Research Mentor outside of UCLA, but for the purposes of the RES PRC 99 course, a faculty member in the Undergraduate Research Centers (URC) will serve as the official instructor of record for your RES PRC 99 course. To begin the enrollment process, you must submit a two-section written proposal for approval. If your proposal is approved, you will be assigned to a URC faculty member to create your RES PRC 99 course contract with.
Section 1: RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT:
• Your full name, major, and UID
• The institution/organization and department where you will be conducting research.
• The name(s) of your Faculty Research Mentor and direct supervisor (if different)
• The dates you will be conducting research
• Hours per week you will be committing to the project
• The name of the program you are participating in (if applicable)
• Attach a copy of an email or letter from your Faculty Research Mentor confirming your participation in this project
Section 2: RESEARCH PLANNED:
• Project title
• Description of the research tasks and activities you will be completing this quarter
• Safety trainings and certifications you will complete prior to beginning your research tasks and activities (if applicable)
• Culminating assignment – identify which of the following you will submit at the end of the quarter for evaluation and grade assessment:
o Research abstract
o Presentation slides
o Research Poster
o Research Paper
Once complete, please attach your proposal to an email and send it to the Research Practice team at researchpractice@college.ulca.edu.
Enrollment
Enrollment in Research Practice includes submission of a course proposal AND a course contract. Course proposals follow the two section formatting above and must be submitted to the Research Practice email by Friday of Week 1. Course contracts are created only AFTER a proposal has been approved and a URC Faculty Mentor has been assigned. All signed contracts must be submitted electronically through MyUCLA Message Center to the Research Practice queue by Friday of Week 2 at 5pm. Hard copy contracts are not accepted. Students must create and submit new contracts for each quarter they enroll in the course.
We cannot accept any proposals after Week 1 under any circumstances.
Step-by-step enrollment instructions can be found here.
If you are conducting research with a Cedars-Sinai PI, please note that proposals and enrollment may be due by an earlier date. View this document for deadlines specific to Cedars-Sinai student researchers.
Grading
RES PRC 99 is graded as Pass/No Pass. Faculty mentors submit grades at the end of the quarter through the Gradebook feature on MyUCLA.
