The California Alliance for Maximizing Potential (CAMP) Program is an NSF-funded program shared across nine UC campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Diego, Riverside, and Merced). CAMP is Focused on Advancing Inclusive Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). We aim to foster the development of scientists at the PhD and Faculty level by providing financial and professional development support to undergraduate scholars.

UCLA’s CAMP program works in collaboration with the following programs, lending additional resources in support of enhancing student success: URC-Sciences Summer Program, HHMI Pathways , UC LEADS, and MARC.

Participation Eligibility


  • Must have submitted a competitive application to the URC-Sciences Summer Program
  • Must be willing to interview with the UCLA CAMP Administrative Director
  • Demonstrate significant potential to succeed in a graduate training program (M.S., Ph.D., MD, and dual degree programs)
  • Must be willing to participate in all CAMP Program activities in the academic year following their participation in the URC-Sciences Summer Program
  • Should demonstrate an uncommon journey into the scientific research enterprise through the following
      • Previous, current or future impact of first-generation status on the candidate’s desired career trajectory in STEM
      • Significant previous or ongoing financial barriers that may impact the candidate’s desired career trajectory in STEM
      • Significant previous or ongoing social, educational, mentorship or other barriers that may impact the candidate’s desired career trajectory in STEM
      • Former/active membership in UCLA’s Academic Advancement Program (AAP)
      • Other criteria that demonstrate a unique or uncharacteristic path into STEM, reviewed by CAMP Program Director
  • Must not be an active member of the following programs:
      • McNair Scholars Program
      • MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) Program
      • Goldwater Scholars Program
      • Others as determined by UCLA and CAMP Program Administrators

Program Requirements


  • Participation in the URC-Sciences Summer Program curriculum: 10 weeks, part-time or full-time, respectively. The curriculum includes seminars, workshops and active learning opportunities to promote student research development and career success.
  • Enrolling in and passing ResPrc194C – Mastering the Oral Presentation of your Research 2u; an alternative or additional course for advanced scholars: ResPrc194B – Writing Research Proposals and Graduate Applications
  • Participation in the annual UC-wide CAMP symposium during the winter quarter; requires the preparation and submission of a research abstract in the fall quarter.
  • Quarterly 1:1 meetings with the UCLA CAMP Directors, to review research progress, program progress, and career development
  • Participation in program surveys as requested by UCLA, the NSF, and affiliated parties.
