Alice Chamberlin

Alice is a rising senior and undergraduate researcher at Eastern Washington University, where she majors in Biochemistry. At EWU, she conducts research under Dr. Nicholas Burgis of the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department. Her research focuses on understanding the kinetics and stability of an ITPase variant present in up to 10% of the population. This variant can cause complications when thiopurine drugs are used by a patient, common in chemotherapy. At UCLA, Alice works under the direction of Dr. Yi Tang from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering. Her research focuses on (DUF) 3328 enzymes, also known as binuclear copper-dependent oxidases (BiNCOs). These enzymes can catalyze a diverse range of post-translational modifications to fungal ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide (RiPP) natural products, which is a structurally diverse but extremely under-studied class of compounds with potent bioactivities. Alice’s research focuses on one of these BiNCOs, which has shown tolerance towards a variety of peptide substrates and has potential as a protein and peptide biocatalyst. She studies (DUF) 3328 kinetics to better understand its conversion capabilities.
