The Beckman Scholars Program at UCLA supports outstanding UCLA undergraduate researchers who are majoring in 1) Chemistry, 2) Biochemistry, 3) Microbiology, Immunology, & Molecular Genetics (MIMG), or 4) Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (MCDB). Beckman Scholars must complete two summers and three quarters of research (15 months total; Summer 2026 through Summer 2027) with a UCLA Beckman Faculty and complete an honors or departmental thesis project under their supervision.

 

Who is eligible

UCLA full-time students who are…

  • majoring in Chemistry, Biochemistry, MIMG, or MCDB
  • a current or previous participant in the Academic Advancement Program (AAP), PEERS and/or other academic and research training programs at UCLA
  • graduating Spring 2027 or later
  • a US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or DACA status
  • committed to a career in science and planning to enter an MD, PhD, or MD-PhD program following graduation

 

What are the program components

Research

  • Conduct research with an approved Beckman Faculty Mentor during Summer 2026 through Summer 2027

Academic

  • Enroll in a departmental 198 or 199 course with your Beckman Faculty Mentor for at least two quarters

Professional Development

  • Participate in UCLA’s Summer Programs for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) professional development seminars

Writing

  • Complete an honors or departmental thesis
  • Submit a final report to the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation

Present your Research

  • Present at the SPUR Symposium during Summer
  • Present at Undergraduate Research and Creativity Showcase
  • Attend the annual Beckman Regional/National Symposium

Scholarship

  • $18,200 in scholarship dispersed throughout the program
